Sandy Winters

As part of Big Botany, the Spencer Museum’s major exhibition that explores humankind’s deep connections and fascinations with the plant kingdom, artist Sandy Winters will visit the Museum to create new, site-specific work. In her artworks, Winters combines the mediums of printmaking, drawing, and painting to realize her mural-like constructions of an imagined future of biological plant-animal-machine hybrids. It is anticipated that elements from her previous installations will be brought into play in her two installations for Big Botany.

Winters earned a BS from the University of New Hampshire and a MFA from Cornell University. Her work tends to depict environments of largely abstracted forms that are forbidding yet playful and bizarre yet familiar. For the last 40 years, her art has been exhibited widely in both group and solo exhibitions held throughout the United States. Some of her more recent solo exhibitions include: Williamson Memorial Award: 10-Year Survey at the Indiana State University Art gallery; Metamorphosis at the Flaten Art Museum in Northfield, Minnesota; and In My Back Yard at George Adams Gallery in New York City.
