Tina Takemoto
Tina Takemoto’s work explores the hidden dynamics of same-sex intimacy and queer sexuality for Japanese Americans incarcerated in internment camps by the U.S. government during World War II. Takemoto’s film Looking for Jiro received the Best Experimental Film Jury Award at the Austin LGBT International Film Festival. In addition Takemoto’s articles appear in Asian Diasporic Visual Cultures and the Americas, Afterimage, Art Journal, GLQ, Journal of Visual Culture, Performance Research, Radical Teacher, among others, and the anthologies Queering Asian American Art, Otherwise: Imagining Queer Feminist Art Histories, and Thinking Through the Skin. Takemoto is an associate professor of visual studies at California College of the Arts, where she serves as Dean of Humanities and Sciences.
Takemoto visits the Spencer as part of ARI's Social Histories series and will participate in a dialogue with fellow ARI visiting creatives Ulrick Jean-Pierre and Adrian Stimson. Takemoto will also deliver a performative lecture and present an experimental video work about how artist and scholars approach queer social history.
