School of the Art Institute of Chicago
Claire Pentecost is an artist and professor at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. The motivation for her work is to learn about the world she lives in and that hosts and sustains her. For this basic project, she thinks of herself as a public amateur, someone who consents to start with "I don't know" and proceeds by learning things in public so that we can put the process of learning itself in a space reserved for debating values, a discursive space we designate as art. She has exhibited in the 13th Istanbul Biennial; White Chapel, London; and for dOCUMENTA(13) she produced the work soil-erg in which she proposed that soil become the basis for a system of value.
