Exhibition Label: "Giorgio Vasari and Court Culture in Late Renaissance Italy," Sep-2012, Sally Cornelison and Susan Earle Written by the great nephew of Vincenzo Borghini, this book examines the same artistic material as that found in Vasari’s Lives. The dialogue is named for the Florentine villa where it takes place, Il Riposo, and the participants imagine walking through Florence to admire the greatest works of art, which are housed in the noblest palaces. Borghini’s intention was to create a book as instructive as Vasari’s, but his rationale was more practical and less directly tied to the cultural traditions that sustained Vasari and the artists portrayed in the Lives. The Riposo owes much to the Lives, including the image seen here, which reprises the allegorical representation of Fame resurrecting dead artists in the 1568 edition of Vasari’s text. Among the names listed on the facing page are those of the engraver Agostino Veneziano and Albrecht Dürer (Alberto Duro), whose works influenced Vasari and are on view elsewhere in the exhibition.
