Docent Program

Docents enhance art experiences at the Spencer Museum for tour groups of all ages and are an integral part of the Museum’s partnership with Lawrence Public Schools. A background in art or teaching is helpful, but not required. All docents are provided with training in art museum education.

Docent testimonial

“The best part is when you get to introduce visitors to the collection, the world of art, and the idea of what it means to be a museum.”

Kevin Boatright, Spencer Museum docent since 2016

Docent Information

What is a docent?

The word “docent” comes from the Latin word that means “to teach.” Docents are volunteer gallery teachers or guides who facilitate visitor learning at the Spencer Museum. They ask questions, make connections, and share information in ways that connect visitors to the art more deeply.

What does becoming a docent look like?

Being a docent requires patience and flexibility. Docents lead tours for K–12 students and community groups. They also represent and advocate for the Spencer in the community.

What training do new docents receive?

Docents receive one year of training, which includes primers on art education, discussion techniques, art history, and the background of the Spencer Museum and our collection. New docents also shadow experienced docents and Museum staff giving tours to observe the flow and habits of tour groups.

How do docents support the Spencer's mission?

Docents support our ability to offer free guided tours to anyone who requests one. Many docents have special interests that inform the tours they give to community groups, including tours in foreign languages, tours highlighting specific geographic regions or time periods, or tours focused on a specific theme.

How do I apply?

For more information about becoming a docent or to sign up for the next docent training cohort, submit your information through the form below. Docent training cohorts begin in September each year.
