And Still We Rise

1919: The Harlem Renaissance begins, arguably, with the publication of Claude McKay’s poem “If We Must Die.” The literary, artistic, and intellectual movement will flourish through the mid-1930s, allowing African American artists unprecedented opportunities to earn their livings and be acknowledged for their talents.
The Harlem Renaissance will become a national movement, fostering a new Black cultural identity as African Americans marshal the arts to express their humanity and to demand equality.
