Event description

Divine Horsemen offers a cinematic journey into the fascinating world of the Voudoun (a.k.a. Voodoo) religion of Haiti. Although the best-known as a pioneer of the independent experimental cinema, Maya Deren, the producer, was also a Voudoun initiate, and hence able to take her camera and recorder where few have gone before. The soundtrack conveys the stirring, invocatory power of the ritual drumming and singing. (1985, 52 minutes) In Voodoo and the Church in Haiti, Western and African cultures collide in Haiti, resulting in religious conflict between Christianity and Vondoun. This film dispels Hollywood stereotypes and presents Vondoun as a belief system that has been passed down from African ancestor to slave to present day Haitian. (1989, 40 minutes) In conjunction with Haitian Art from the Hughes Collection
