Exhibition Label: Installation related to "Tokyo: The Imperial Capital Woodblock prints by Koizumi Kishio, 1928-1940," Feb-2005, Hillary Pedersen In this series of thirty prints, Hiroshige depicted well-known tea houses and restaurants incorporated within the scenic landscapes of Edo. Yanagi Bridge was part of the popular entertainment area of Edo, where courtesans would entertain guests at the numerous eating and drinking establishments. Here, a courtesan crosses the bridge and is met by a female attendant who carries a lantern bearing the name of the restaurant where she will entertain. The courtesan is followed by a servant who carries her shamisen, which she will play for the guests at the restaurant. The wooden bridge depicted here was destroyed in the 1923 earthquake, and was replaced by a new steel structure.
