Archive Label 2003:
Many literati painters, or bunjinga, in eighteenth-and nineteenth century Japan based their work on Chinese models, depicting Chinese landscape and referring to specific types of brushstrokes that were associated with one or another famous Chinese painter of the past. This landscape resembles others that Chikuto- based on the work of the tenth-century Chinese artist Dong Yuan. The artist’s evocation of a specific ancient master was intended to add resonance to a reinterpretation of important themes and styles of the past.
