Quilts from the University of Kansas Museum of Art
(No. 1)An example of a very simple Nine-patch, this pattern can, with slightly different spacing, serve as the basis of the much more complex Irish Chain design shown in quilts No. 4 and 5. Harriett Theetge James was born near Aurora, Indiana in 1862. In 1902 she moved with her family to Chanute, Kansas, where she made many of her fine quilts. Her quilting style was influenced by that of an older relative, Mrs. Malcom, whose quilts form another portion of the large and important Malcom-James Collection. Mrs. James died in Chanute in 1927.
