Exhibition Label: "Geometric Abstractions: Quilts 1870 to 1990," Jun-2002, Samantha Schramm After moving to Kansas from Indiana in 1876, Harriett Theetge James and her sister Mary Eliza Theetge Malcom completed two quilts in this pattern. The Seven Stars design was probably based on one of the many patterns available from mail-order publishers. However, this quilt differs from others in that the interaction of red and blue diamonds with the white fabric creates an interesting variation that contributes to the dynamics of this quilt design. Archive Label: After moving to Kansas from Indiana in 1876, Harriett Theetge James and her sister Mary Eliza Theetge Malcom completed two quilts in this pattern. Mary Eliza married Jonathan Malcom, son of Christina Malcom, whose quilts are included in this exhibition. The Seven Stars design was probably based on one of the many patterns available from mail order publishers.
