Exhibition Label: "Printed Art and Social Radicalism," Jun-2002, Stephen Goddard Käthe Kollwitz devoted her career to printmaking in the service of radical politics. Together with the Belgian artist Frans Masereel (see his book of woodcuts exhibited here), Kollwitz helped to define a style that became synonymous with international socialism and communism. From 1895 to 1898 Kollwitz worked on her series A Weavers Rebellion. Based on a play by Gerhardt Hauptman, the series chronicles an uprising of Silesian weavers and the ultimate demise of their rebellion. Ende is the last in the series, showing survivors of the revolt caring for their fallen comrades.
