The daughter of the painter Nakabayashi Chikutō (1776-1853), Seishuku specialized in paintings of plum blossoms. Plum trees are among the first to blossom in early spring, when the weather is still cold. The plum thus symbolized fortitude, and was considered one of the "four gentlemen" along with bamboo, chrysanthemum, and orchid.
