Though chiefly known for his images of beautiful women, Shinsui also created landscape prints. Eight Views of Lake Biwa is probably his best known series. The pine at Karasaki appears in prints by Hiroshige and others as a huge tree whose limbs, in need of support due to their size and weight, extend out into the waters of Lake Biwa. In a delightful twist, Shinsui has taken us beneath the limbs and through the "forest" of supports to the very trunk. The intertwining branches and the morning glow over the waters of the lake demonstrate Shinsui's ability to create powerful yet subtle images.
