Archive Label 2003: Robert Sudlow is an important local artist whose work was recently selected for purchase through the generosity of Tom Brokaw and Scottie Lingelbach, using proceeds from Tom Brokaw’s 1998 book The Greatest Generation; additional donors are listed below. Lingelbach, a 15-year Spencer Museum of Art docent and a KU alumna, was an ensign in WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service), the Navy’s female auxiliary, during World War II. Her experiences in the war were among those portrayed in Brokaw’s best-selling book. Sudlow’s Frozen Farm is shown here in lieu of his painting acquired through the “Greatest Generation Fund,” From Lemesany Hill, 1995, which is currently on tour in the exhibition Spiritual Journeys: The Art of Robert Sudlow. Both works are remarkable depictions of the local Kansas winter landscape. From Lemesany Hill will return to the Spencer Museum of Art at the end of the tour in early 2005. Born in Holton, Kansas, Robert Sudlow studied as an undergraduate with Albert Bloch, Karl Mattern, and Raymond Eastwood. Upon graduation from the University of Kansas, he served in the United States Navy as a seaplane pilot and was discharged as Lieutenant, Senior Grade. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for service in the Western Pacific Theater in World War II. He taught at the University of Kansas from 1945 until his retirement in 1987. Sudlow continues to live and work in Lawrence, Kansas. Exhibition Label: "Windmills to Workshops: Lawrence and the Visual Arts," Jul-2004, Kate Meyer Frozen Farm, like much of Robert Sudlow’s work, celebrates the beauty of northeast Kansas. Here, Sudlow uses a subtle and surprisingly varied palette of colors to evoke the local winter landscape. Born in Holton, Kansas, Sudlow studied at KU from 1938 to 1942. In 1962 he was hired as a professor of drawing and painting and subsequently taught here until his retirement in 1987.
