Archive Label: A Rake’s Progress was etched and engraved from a series of eight paintings Hogarth completed in 1734 depicting the fall of a young gentleman who rejects a life of virtue and hard work to waste his life in dissipation. Hogarth contrasts the aristocratic vices of folly, drunkenness, and debauchery with the middle-class virtues of work, thrift, loyalty, and Christian benevolence - the lifestyle that Hogarth was recommending to his viewers.
