The central figure is a heraldic bird with outstretched wings. A bulla (a pendant holding an amulet) is around the bird’s neck with a cross symbol to the upper right. In Coptic tradition, this winged bird with the bulla is a Christian symbol of the freed soul ready to ascend. The bird is surrounded by arabesque designs with a crenellated border. This textile may be from the early Islamic Tulunid Dynasty, 868-906 CE.
