Exhibition Label: "Personal Geometry: Quilts by Yoshiko Jinzenji and Virginia Jean Cox Mitchell," Feb-2014, Susan Earle and Cassandra Mesick After recognizing the potential for local flora to serve as colorants, Jinzenji began experimenting with roots, bark, and leaves. These trials left the artist with a large sample of cotton, wool, and silk in a dizzying array of colors. Eager to use this hand-dyed cloth as an integral design component, she created ribbons of squares and triangles artfully pieced together in pleasing combinations of shade and texture. The resulting series of textiles showcases these ribbon cloths by placing them on meticulously quilted swaths of silk.
