Tanning was introduced to Surrealism through the Museum of Modern Art’s exhibition Fantastic Art, Dada, Surrealism, and eventually befriended many artists and writers associated with the movement. She married Max Ernst in a double ceremony with Man Ray and Juliet Browner. Tanning continued to devote herself to visual art through her seventies, and focused more on her literary career as a writer and poet in later decades.
