Exhibition Label: "Climate Change at the Poles," Jan-2009, Kate Meyer, Jennifer Talbott, and Angela Watts British explorer James Clark Ross (1800-1862) traveled to both the Arctic and the Antarctic. His Antarctic expedition utilized the HMS Erebus and Terror, special thick-hulled vessels outfitted with mortars rather than cannons. This technology proved effective for bombarding a fixed position in wartime but also breaking through ice. Ross charted a great deal of the Antarctic coastline, which begins to emerge as we look at this map. In contrast to the approximations that characterize earlier maps of Terra Australis, Ross’s map only accounts for confirmed and accurate data.
