Archive Label 1999: This image is taken from a watercolor by Thomas Rowlandson. It illustrates a long, episodic poem by William Combe called "The Second Tour of Doctor Syntax in Search of Consolation." Here the eccentric clergyman is seen on one of his travels, leaning out the window of an inn in order to watch his companion Pat, waist-deep in the pond below, attempting to rid himself of the fleas he has acquired while traveling.
