Archive Label 2003: The fine decoration on this tsuba is a miniature version of a long gourd with its leaves and tendrils made of gold leaf. In Japan, gourds are regarded as lucky charms and were also considered symbols of longevity, an appropriate decoration for a sword guard. Tsuba were attached to swords at the point the sharp edge of the blade begins in order to protect the hand of the sword’s bearer.
