Drawing from the rich visual language of Japanese anime, Lu Yang’s computer-generated animation introduces an androgynous superhero whose abilities stem from the female reproductive system. As Lu explains, “Uterus Man may seem to be male given its superhero powers. However, the source of these superpowers originates from the uterus’s unique ability to propagate.” Despite Uterus Man’s female-derived superpowers, Lu does not consider it a feminist statement. Rather, Uterus Man is an interdisciplinary exploration of neuroscience, behavioral psychology, and cyborg technology, while also delving into issues of gender and sexual identity.
