In 1985, Steve Miller, City Councilman from Riverside, Iowa, reached out to Gene Roddenberry, the American screenwriter known for creating the original Star Trek television series, to ask permission to declare Riverside the “small town in the state of Iowa” that would be the future birthplace of the character James Tiberius Kirk, captain of the USS Enterprise. With Roddenberry’s permission, the Riverside City Council Meeting of April 8, 1985, declared the Riverside Area Community Club as “the only officially recognized entity to promote Riverside as the future birthplace of Captain Kirk.” Proceeds from the sale of soil from the site benefit the Riverside Area Community.
