Healing, Knowing, Seeing the Body
These two recent works reflect the expansion of Carnie’s collaborative collage and stitch work series. The work on the top, by Carnie and Vanessa Rolf, was created through a method that approximates, in some ways, the process of organ transplantation. Artist Rachel Causer sent Carnie’s works to Rolf with an invitation to join the elements together; at the time Rolf worked on the pieces, neither she nor Carnie were aware of the other’s identity, maintaining the anonymity that accompanies organ donation. Causer also asked Rolf to reflect on the experience through a questionnaire that inquired what it was like to be presented with the responsibility of modifying another artist’s work. The bottom piece was finished by Andrea Barrett, a 23-year-old student and heart transplant recipient Carnie met through his research with the Hybrid Bodies project.
