Edo castle, the residence of the shogun during the Edo period, was the site of many well-known landmarks, including the prominant Sakurada Gate, which was the inner gate to the castle compound, and Benkei moat, where a popular three-bucket public well was located. This print depicts city-dwellers drawing water from the well, their daily mundane activities contrasting with the stalwart power and solemnity represented by the sturdy stone base of the castle to the left. Sakurada Gate was also the site of the 1860 execution of Ii Naosuke, a prominant regional lord who advocated Japan’s involvement in international relations.
