Archive Label Sept-May 1993: Although Hiroshige is best known for his landscape series, he also designed some flower and bird albums. This print came from such an album, produced during his middle period in the 1830s. Similar to flower, bird, and animal subjects by French artists...Hiroshige's aim is not to make a realistic nature study. For example, he does not depict the bird as a three-dimensionally rounded object occupying volume in space. Rather, the Japanese and French artists of this period used their subjects as a starting point towards abstraction. Eliminating details and focusing on the contour, the artists arranged the more two-dimensional shapes with an eye to the pattern and design on the paper.
