One History, Two Versions
In 1955, following a protest of the acquittal of Emmett Till’s murderers, Rosa Parks refused to get up from her seat on a bus. The yearlong Montgomery Bus Boycott launched a generation of activists including Martin Luther King Jr. This artwork is a tribute to King, represented by his iconic speech and memorial statue. The title references how the same event can be covered differently by media. Look magazine published interviews with both Till’s and King’s killers, while Jet —“The Weekly Negro News Magazine”—published eyewitness accounts in their attempt to report the truth.
