Lawrence, KS, December 3, 2012 – Dr. Marilyn Stokstad, a renowned art historian, University of Kansas distinguished professor emerita of art history, and former art museum director, has made a lead gift to create an endowed directorship at the Spencer Museum of Art.

Lawrence, KS – For more than two years, North Carolina-based sculptor Patrick Dougherty’s The Bedazzler, a temporary sculpture commissioned by the Spencer Museum of Art for a 2009 exhibition about trees, has anchored the corner of 14th Street and Jayhawk Boulevard in front of Spooner Hall.

Lawrence, KS – On Sunday, September 11 at 5 PM, the Spencer Museum of Art and the KU School of Music will present Mexican-American lyric tenor Genaro Méndez, a KU associate professor of voice, and accompanist Robert Hiller, a KU alumnus and university voice coach in Germany, performing a program that celebrates music and art from the 16th to 19th centuries, featuring composers Beethoven, Dowland, Liszt, and Tosti.

Lawrence, KS – The Spencer Museum of Art will conclude KU’s 2011 Homecoming weekend in style with a Family Fun Day from 1-3 PM on Sunday, October 2. Presented in conjunction with the exhibition Crafting Continuities, the free event will feature a variety of hands-on art activities and demonstrations by local artists.

Written and directed by O’Neal, Au Pair, Kansas has won international honors, including the 2011 Best Low Budget Feature Film award at the Cannes Independent Film Festival.

Established in 2008, Spencer project continues to advance creative and collaborative potential of virtual museum space.

Lawrence, KS, November 13, 2011 – The Spencer Museum of Art invites members of the press to a light lunch and preview of the Museum’s fall 2011 lineup of exhibitions next Wednesday, October 19, from Noon to 1 PM.

KU artists and scientists are invited to apply for a cross-disciplinary workshop at the Konza Prairie Biological Station in Manhattan, Kan., on July 15. The workshop, co-sponsored by the Spencer Museum of Art and a Kansas State University Academic Excellence Award, is designed as a day of discovery and dialogue for scholars from the arts and sciences to share research ideas and approaches.

Lawrence, KS, December 19, 2011 – The Spencer Museum of Art at the University of Kansas has again achieved accreditation by the American Association of Museums (AAM), the highest national recognition afforded the nation’s museums. Accreditation signifies excellence to the museum community, to governments, funders, outside agencies, and to the museum-going public. The Spencer was initially accredited in 1978, the year the museum opened, and has maintained accreditation ever since.

Called Project Redefine, the transformation represents a dramatic shift from traditionally conceived galleries organized by time period and continent to an innovative new organizational principle based on themes, drawing works from disparate regions and eras into the same physical space and, by extension, into conversation with one another.
