Archive Label date unknown: Born to a family of cloth dyers in Edo (present day Tokyo), Kuniyoshi was trained in the family craft before studying painting and printmaking. He quickly established his own style which became so popular that he is said to have had numerous requests to tattoo young Edo dandies with his dramatic and complex compositions. He is best known for his prints of actors, animals, and heroic episodes in Japanese history. This is one of a rare series entitled Rokuyōsei Kuniyoshi Jiman (Six Characters: Kuniyoshi's Pride) and was completed just one year before the artists death. It depicts the warrior Inagawa Yoshimoto defending himself against an attacker. In this print, Kuniyoshi has subordinated spatial clarity to dramatic intensity as the three warriors appear to merge into a single statement of tautly controlled action.
