Forms of Thought
One of the leading modern painters of Costa Rica, Fernández left her native Colombia for Costa Rica at the age of three. In 1961, Fernández was awarded an UNESCO Creative Arts Grant that allowed her to spend a year in Asia. She split the majority of her time between Japan and India. The trip resulted in the Serie Oriente (Eastern Series), a series of paintings, to which this piece belongs. The thick, black, gestural mark across a neutral background evokes East Asian calligraphy.
