The Stouse Collection: The Arts of Costa Rica
August 25, 1974–October 6, 1974
University of Kansas Museum of Art, Lawrence, Kansas
Costa Rican art, be it pre-Columbian or contemporary, has long been bypased for the arts of Peru and Meico. Hence this superb collection, gathered by the late Pierre Stouse and Mrs. Stouse, casts light on a relatively unexplored area. Fine examples of pre-Columbian pottery and stonework show that the early Costa Rican artist had an ability equaling his Aztec and Inca contemporaries. Seveal motifs demonstrate that the Costa Rican artist was aware of Mexican forms, yet his expression remain independant. Colonian South American painting and sculpture, as well as contemporary Central American works, are included; the modern works from the Stouse Collection represent not only Costa Rica but also peripheral areas. Ranging widely in both period and medium, the Stouse Collection provides a vivid sampling of Costa Rican art. The exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue prepared by Ann Hornbaker and James Ballinger.
