Archive Label 2003: Born in Anhui province, Xiao received painting instrcution emphasizing the traditions of the conservative Orthodox School. These painters placed special importance on the study and emulation of work by earlier masters. At age thirty-eight he went to Beijing, where he was able to see exhibitions featuring a variety of painting styles. In particular, he was fascinated with the works of Shitao (1642-1707), Mei Qing (1623-97), and Gong Xian (died 1689), artists whose work was being critically reevaluated early in the twentieth century. Their paintings became a significant influence on Xiao's work. Here, his inscription stating that this landscape was modeled on the painting of Mei Qing, and his use of the traditional scholar-in-landscape motif demonstrate his desire to identify himself with the acknowledged great masters of the past.
