Exhibition Label: "Constructions of Place: Architecture in Photography," Jan-1991, Erin Barnett Bonfils mass produced photographs of ancient cities and historical landscapes in the Middle East during the nineteenth century. The preface to a nineteenth-century book of his work suggests the attraction his pictures had: “The traveler and the artist departing for this enchanted region, those returning or those spirits curious about and enamored of beautiful things will be unable to forgo perusing the marvelous series of plates which make up this remarkable publication.”
