Archive Label 2003: This print was part of an extraordinary effort at nature-printing. It was made by Christian Gottlieb Ludwig, a botanist-physician in Leipzig and published in his book Ectypa vegetabilium. Because of the methods involved, color-print versions of the book are quite rare. The prints were made by an unusual process that involved placing the actual plant to be printed on a surface, covering it with dark dust, running it through a press, and then coloring the resulting outlines by hand. The fibrous nature of the stem on the print here is clearly decipherable and the hand coloring of the blooms is quite delicate.
