"Japan Re-imagined/Post-war Art," Mar-2008, Kris Ercums
Schooled in the Japanese academy prior to World War II, Miyamoto practiced a Japanese hybrid of impressionism and Barbizon school painting—a French school that emphasized en plein air, literally “in open air,” painting created from outdoor observation. In the post-war period Miyamoto continued to roam the Japanese countryside, capturing distilled peaceful images far removed from the urban sprawl of metropolises like Tokyo.

Archive Label date unknown:
Miyamoto Saburō, born in Nagano, was head of the Tokyo Hanga (woodblock print) Institute for a number of years. He typically designed landscapes that evoke a lyrical mood with their pastel colors and misty or rainy atmospheres. Here a small figure is seated in a boat fishing in the rain at the edge of the reeds. Behind and to the right of the solitary angler stands a traditionally thatched building. Waving bamboo and trees in various shades and colors fade gradually into the distance.
