In 1948 Suzuki Osamu with Yagi Kazuo and Yamada Hikaru founded a boldly experimental group called S*deisha. Vowing not to submit work to established exhibitions and not to imitate traditional ceramics, the group put their careers at risk to explore the potential of ceramic sculpture. They became the impetus for the vibrant ceramic sculpture movement in Japan. Although Suzuki received international acclaim beginning with the ‘golden prize’ at the 1962 Prague International Ceramics Exhibition, it was not until much later that his importance was recognized in Japan.
