Exhibition Label: "The Art of Stories Told," Jun-2004, Veronica de Jong During the last decades of the Qing dynasty, China struggled against the incursions of numerous foreign powers seeking to exploit it with unfair trade agreements. In 1900, the Japanese, Russians, French, British, Germans, United States and other nations joined forces to attack China. China was particularly vulnerable at this time, having suffered numerous civil uprisings in the past century that made it difficult for the government to effectively deal with these assaults. This print illustrates a battle between the Russians and Chinese at Niuzhuang in northeastern China. According to the inscription, Russian and Japanese troops led a surprise attack on Niuzhuang and the Chinese commanders, Song and Li, pretended to retreat in order to draw them out. The Chinese troops waited in ambush with land mines and cannons killing 2,000 Japanese troops. Depicted here are scenes of Chinese troops attacking Russians. In the foreground is a dynamically arranged unit of Chinese soldiers and cavalry charging the Russians. The walled city occupied by the Russians is shown exploding and bursting into flames; soldiers' bodies are propelled over the walls while others try to escape through a gate. In the middle of the print a line of troops bearing various Chinese flags force Russians to retreat up a slope behind the city.
