Like the overshot technique, the Roman Rosette pattern seen on this opalescent plate is an example of a design primarily developed to hide the imperfections often seen in early glass. The Lacy patterns, such as the Roman Rosette, were specifically created to conceal defects in pressed glass. Sand, bubbles and other flaws were masked by the stippled or textured surface. This plate exhibits not only a lovely pattern, but a stunning fiery opalescent color as well.
