Backyard Bash: Conference of the Birds
A ring of found rocks holds together a data visualization of what remains of the tallest bird in North America: the whooping crane, or Grus Americana, which is an endangered species. Their numbers sharply declined after European contact and only 5% remains today. Dunne’s installation appears as a sundial, reflecting the passage of time, and reveals the 95% loss of population. Dunne describes the slice of nest as “made from various naturally harvested marshland plants, including cattails, bulrushes, and sedges…held together with mud. The loose straw may be used by birds to create their own nests.”
