Empire of Things
Wright’s representation of the ancient Greek philosopher Democritus, who sits contemplating an assortment of bones, expresses the 18th-century interest in scientific investigation. This image is a detail derived from a larger painting titled The Philosopher by Lamp Light, created circa 1769. This smaller work engages the viewer in the philosopher’s intense state of curiosity. Democritus’s face, resting upon his hand, conveys melancholy mixed with fascination. Wright’s intimate composition represents the expansion of the notion of time beyond the lifespan of subject and viewer, both of whom may find a material reference to themselves in the skeletal remains.
