Archive Label date unknown: Kiyomitsu was a member of the Torii School, which specialized in prints of kabuki actors. In this scene the actor Sakata Hangorō II (fl. 1742-1782) is noted as playing the part of Satsushima Hyōgo and the actor Bandō Hikosaburō II (1741-1768) taking the role of Shita no Kotarō. Both the actors are costumed for their characters' parts, but also bear personal family crests on their kimono. This print is termed a benizurie, prints colored with red (beni) and a green pigment in addition to the basic black ink outlines. It was not until 1765 that true multi-color printing could be produced cost effectively.
