Kansas Printmakers (1880-1960)
Elizabeth Broun, curator
June 7, 1981–August 2, 1981
White Gallery, Spencer Museum of Art, University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas

These prints from the 1880s tot he 1950s are by six Kansas printmakers who were the pioneers of printmaking in Kansas. They forged a tradition where none existed;. They convey a devotion to landscape, almost to the exclusion of the figure. They care little for situations, for the self-conscious portrayal of "the American Scene," seem unaware of history and wee not recording their subjects with the backward glance of nostalgia. Their pictures live in their present.
