Exhibition Label: “C.A. Seward: Artist and Draftsman,” Feb-2010, Kate Meyer Seward preferred to develop the compositions of his prints on paper before transferring his design to the lithographic plate. This comparison reveals that the artist carefully gridded and quartered a square piece of brown paper and then refined his composition within that framework. Any mark made on Seward’s plates would print in reverse, so this drawing shows his interest in how the final product would look.
