fineline black-on-white olla (jar), Lucy M. Lewis (circa 1898–1992, active circa 1920–1990)

Lucy M. Lewis, the first Acoma Pueblo potter to sign her pottery, painted this ceramic jar with diamonds of black parallel lines. Traditional Acoma Pueblo pottery was formed from slate-like clay found in the hills of New Mexico, which allowed for thin sculpted walls, and was often decorated with geometric designs of black, white, and orange.
