Nirvana (chair), Wendell Castle (1932–2018)

Castle is widely acknowledged to be the leading figure in the American studio furniture movement of the 1960s and '70s, and he continues to be an innovator in the field. Nirvana is a deep azure sculptural chair with smooth, rounded features made of polychromed fiberglass. The artist donated this work to the Spencer Museum when he received an honorary doctorate of arts from the University of Kansas in 2013.
