Dutch Prints of Daily Life

Holland, a flourishing world trade center and intellectual hub in the 17th century, is the subject of an exhibition of 63 prints which capture the spirit of the culture in all its vigor and diversity. Illustrated in the exhibition are street scenes, festivals, trades, and professions, domestic interiors and common and curious occurrences. Do the images contain disguised messages beneath their descriptive surface; are they meant to teach the viewer about morals, virtues, and vices? Or, are they simply documentary records of the world in which artists lived? Among the artists represented are Jan Brueghel, Adriaen van Ostade, Jan van de Velde and Rembrandt van Rijn. Linda Stone, professor of art history at the University of Kansas, selected the works from museums in the united States including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and the Chicago Art Institute. A fully illustrated catalogue are supported by a grant from the KU Endowment Association. "Dutch Prints of Daily Life" will travel to Yale University and the University of Texas at Austin.
