Shared Spirits: Exploring Día de los Muertos examines the partnership
between the Watkins Museum of History and the Spencer Museum of Art to preserve, interpret, and share artifacts related to Mexico’s Day of the Dead celebrations. For nearly ten years, a collection of about 130 artifacts, representing a variety of Day of the Dead traditions and assembled by the KU Anthropology Museum, has been on long-term loan to the Watkins Museum. The material, now belonging to the Spencer Museum of Art, has provided the inspiration for a series of exhibits over the years. These exhibits have highlighted the cultural traditions that surround Días de los Muertos in Latin America and often related these traditions to aspects of life in Douglas County. Presented in conjunction with the Spencer Museum’s At Large programming, this year’s exhibit will showcase this partnership between local museums and trace the origins of this collection of Day of the Dead artifacts, their cultural significance, and how these artifacts have been shared with the Lawrence community. Shared Spirits will be on display on the Watkins Museum’s second floor from October 6 through November 30, 2015.
