A still life is an artistic interpretation of an arrangement of objects that do not move. It is a classification of art among other genres like portraits, landscapes, and history paintings. Many still lifes depict objects such as fruit, flowers, dishes, and even dead animals. Sometimes artists are inspired by how things appear in everyday life and include found objects in their still lifes.
The Spencer Museum’s collection features many different examples of still lifes, including several on view throughout the galleries and in this Drawing Studio. Here, you can read about what makes these five still lifes distinct and create your own by drawing one of the arrangements on display.
