Exhibition Overview
Contemporary African American Women Artists: Looking at the Past, Living in the Present
Study Gallery, Spencer Museum of Art, University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas
An installation of works from the collection by six African American female artists. Five are of the same generation and emerged as artists in the 1970s and 80s, while Elizabeth Catlett was born in 1919 and has been an artist since just before World War II. The common thread of the disparate works on display was the artists looking back at their influences in American history and African culture and at their roles in contemporary America.
